What is Red Zebra?

Red Zebra is a strategic personal branding business. It inspires others through mentoring and coaching to uncover their “Purassion”, the energy involved in attracting and grasping opportunities resulting in a fulfilling and sustainable future.

As the founder of Red Zebra I like to come along-side my clients and guide them to take control of this themselves so they learn to manage their own personal brand and all those involved in executing it. This way it remains authentic, consistent and congruent with their personal brand voice.

What the Red Zebra business does not do, is the artwork; marketing or copy writing of digital content for clients.

Tell me more about your take on Personal Branding?

In 1997 I read The Brand Called You, by Tom Peters, then CEO of Me Inc.

“It’s time for me — and you — to take a lesson from the big brands, that’s true for anyone who’s interested in what it takes to stand out and prosper in the new world of work.

Regardless of age, position, business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.

It’s that simple — that hard and that inescapable.”

This informed the foundation of my mission as a Careers Practitioner.

I apply the principles of product/service branding, to people. We all have a Personal Brand.

By elevating it, we can cut through the noise and the competition.

The fundamentals of a successful brand are to have: a purpose; values; a story; a personality; be visible; be memorable; consistent and be distinguishable.

This is the lens I use to bring personal brands alive. Memorable brands illicit an emotional response and emotion energises the right audience to action.

Personal Brand is the unique combination of skills, experience, personality and attributes the world sees in you. And the clearer and more intentional your personal brand is communicated, the easier it is for the world to see your true potential and value. Then the world can distinguish you from the crowded herd based on all the right reasons.

There is a physicality to Personal Brand as reflected in your behaviour, spoken and unspoken words, attitudes and by your physical presence. It comes from the collection of experiences people have in their minds from doing business with you.


Tell me about a typical client engagement

Clients are frequently referred by past champions who completed a Red Zebra program and are now in their dream roles.

Typically those referred are extremely talented, successful, performing well but the current job has become a chore and no longer feels the best fit.

During the initial discovery session, I hear many layers of dissatisfaction, frustration and a sense of resignation. As their story unfolds several common key points come to light. These folk are often in their 50’s with a list of amazing career achievements, yet they feel stuck and unable to envision the ‘what next?’. They constantly feel tired and frustrated and have no energy left for all for the other parts of their life. They yearn to feel the drive and commitment again.

This presents a career crossroad. When wanting to leave a meaningful legacy seems impossible.

What frustrations in the market do you solve?

Red Zebra takes away the pain of career burnout; career crossroads or career derailment.

I’ve kept myself ahead of the curve in understanding personal branding. I understand that digital media is a powerful tool for promoting your personal leadership brand in order to attract the right opportunities.

In fact, I would say I am an expert.  I understand where career management, leadership profile, personal brand, career brand and personal image intersect – I know how to extract Purassion from where those points meet.  I understand the relationship between all the different tools we use to promote our brand come together, and I mean the way we appear, not just what we write.

Why do you do what you do instead of something else?

I have tried other things, and this is what I love to do. This is what energises me and it never feels like work.  I’ve tried to specialise in other things, yet I come back to this.

I come back to mentoring, speaking and facilitating personal brand because intellectually I get it, it suits me and I’ve experienced it. For the first 15 years I didn’t have a website, because this business was been built through my network connections with referrals and partnerships. That is personal brand at work. I have earnt my stripes!

As a coach and mentor, I believe we learn from each client we face and work with.

The bonus for every person who undertakes a program with me is they benefit from the wisdom and experience I have gained from every past client, and I have an MCG of people who stand behind me!
